Chumash
Spirit Being
Many indigenous petroglyphs are records, stories,
or touchstones to sacred places and times. Spirals at Chaco
Canyon in New Mexico mark the solstices, as do spirals that
occur at a Neolithic site in New Grange, Ireland. Solarized
(shown with a halo or light rays around head) shamanic figures
occur at sacred pools in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona,
showing that they were sites where ceremonies, prayers, and
visioning occurred. In this ancient Chumash petroglyph an ancestral
or totem spirit is shown, perhaps invoking or honoring a spirit
protector and helper.
