Stories of Fairies abound around the world. In English, the name fairy derives from "fey" an old English word that meant, literally, one who was "within the other worlds"; fey could mean the Fairy Folk, or apply to a person who was mad. In India, elemental beings are called "Devas", a word used as well by the founders of Findhorn in Scotland for their collaborations with the devas of the flower and vegetable world (see, THE FINDHORN GARDEN). Among the Hopi, elemental spirits, which can include the beings that protect and live among flowers, are Kachinas.

Irish mythology abounds with Fairy Lore; from the grandeur of the beautiful and dangerous Faery Queen, to the flower fairies and elves that Irish housewives placed a bowl of milk outside at night to please (or appease). But any child can tell you that, on a beautiful day, among the blooming flowers, there are, indeed, fairies.
